Monuments are surveyed points whose coordinates have been established, verified, and published for future use by the engineering and surveying communities. In December of 2006, the GIS Work Group completed a report recommending an increase in the number of number of geodetic control monuments within Cecil County.
With funds made available in July 2008 via a grant from the Chesapeake Science and Security Corridor, the County contracted with GW Stephens and Associates to install new static monuments and update the control network in the County.
Completed in October of 2009, the project includes 123 monuments in the final adjustment, of which 97 were new static monuments, 22 were updates to existing static monuments, and four were CORS (continually operating reference station) monuments. The new geodetic control network is in Maryland State Plane NAD 83 (NSRS 2007) and NAVD 88.
The project data was ultimately "blue-booked" by the National Geodetic Survey in February 2012, and as such, is now available from the NGS website.
A map of the monuments' locations and a GIS shapefile and spreadsheet containing the monuments' locations (northing and easting), elevation, scale factor, and combined scale factor are all available on this webpage. The monuments' locations are also available on Cecil Maps, the County's online GIS application.
The final project report is also available on this webpage. If you are interested in obtaining a CD containing all of the project deliverables (i.e. photos, observation logs, obstruction diagrams, etc), please contact the GIS coordinator by e-mail or via phone at 410-996-5220.
